Your First Visit

What Happens During a New Patient Exam?

Your new patient exam begins with a thorough review of your medical and dental history. Dr. Barbu will ask about any current symptoms, past dental work, medications you take, and systemic health conditions that may affect your oral health. This information shapes every aspect of your care — from which X-rays to take to which treatments to prioritize.

The clinical examination covers your face and neck for lumps or swelling, your soft tissues (lips, gums, tongue, palate, cheeks) for abnormalities or early signs of oral cancer, your bite and jaw joint for function and comfort, and each tooth for cavities, cracks, wear, or existing restorations that need attention. Periodontal charting measures the depth of pockets around every tooth to assess gum health.

Following the exam, Dr. Barbu discusses all findings with you clearly and honestly. If you are due for a professional cleaning, it is often performed at the same visit. If treatment is needed, a prioritized plan is presented with your options, estimated costs, and insurance coverage explained before anything begins.

Digital X-Rays and Modern Diagnostics

Digital X-rays are an essential part of your new patient exam. Many of the most important dental problems — cavities between teeth, bone loss around roots, impacted teeth, infections, and early cysts — are invisible during a clinical exam alone. Digital radiography allows us to detect these issues early, when treatment is simpler, less invasive, and far less expensive.

Our digital X-ray system emits up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and images are available instantly on screen for Dr. Barbu to review with you chairside. We can zoom in, adjust contrast, and annotate the images to help you understand exactly what is happening inside your mouth. For patients who need a broader view of jaw structure, tooth positioning, or airway anatomy, we also offer 3D cone beam imaging at our office.

The images taken at your first visit serve as an important baseline. At future appointments, we compare new X-rays against your initial set to identify even subtle changes over time — giving us an early warning system for any developing issues. This is one of the most powerful preventative tools available in modern dentistry.

A Warm Welcome

Starting Your Dental Journey at Roam Dental

We want your first visit to feel easy and stress-free. Please bring a valid photo ID, your dental insurance card if you have one, a list of any medications or supplements you take, and any questions or concerns you have noted down. If you have dental records or X-rays from a previous provider, we are happy to receive them in advance to avoid duplicating films and reduce your time in the chair.

New patient paperwork can be completed online before your visit or in office upon arrival. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early if completing forms in person. Our team will confirm your insurance benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises at checkout. We offer flexible scheduling including early morning and evening appointments for patients with busy work schedules.

Most importantly, please tell us about any dental anxiety or past experiences that make visits difficult. We take dental fear seriously and offer a calm, patient-centered approach for every appointment. Whether it has been one year or ten years since your last visit, we are here to help — not judge. Book your new patient exam today and take the first step toward a healthier smile.
